Palazzolo Acreide - Vizzini - Caltagirone
Palazzolo Acreide
Palazzolo Acreide is a charming little jewel of baroque architecture which strangely is outside the usual tourist routes. This quiet town also boasts one of the most interesting (and less publicized) sites of ancient ruins. The original medieval city is abandoned after the earthquake of 1693 and the new Palazzolo was built in the shadow of the ancient Greek colony and Akrai.
Caltagirone
Caltagirone, a hilly town full of charm, is famous throughout Sicily for its ceramics, produced by over a thousand years grace to the high quality of local clay and still fundamental to the economy. The first settlers were already devoted to the creation of pottery, but only with the arrvo of the Arabs in the tenth century, was born a true ceramic industry, with the introduction of enamelling and polychrome, especially of yellow and blue, that still characterize the local production. Every corner of Caltagirone demonstrates the importance of this tradition, especially the famous Spanish Steps of Santa Maria del Monte, coated ceramics.
